Our Success Stories
As part of our on-going mission to help dogs thrive, Casey’s Legacy, Inc. works with canine rescue groups and shelters to provide quality training for dogs in need of behavior modification to help them get successfully adopted into great homes. Our team is currently working with or has worked with the following dogs.
Sarge
Say hi to Sarge. This big boy is about 1 ½ years old. He was surrendered to an area shelter due to his overly protective instincts. Southeast German Shepherd Rescue came to his rescue and pulled him.
Sarge came to us to work on his protective issues and some minor food aggression. We are addressing these concerns with providing him a highly structured life where we can guide him in his decision making process. Holding him accountable in his training has helped him to start making better decisions and not feel overwhelmed by situations he can’t control.
He still has some work to be done but is coming along very well and is thriving with strong leadership in his life.
Vader
This handsome boy is Vader. He came to us from Southeast German Shepherd Rescue as a return due to behavioral and anxiety issues. We learned after taking him in that he had some previous training but it was likely not reinforced enough in his everyday life to overcome his anxiety. He lived in a high activity household with very active children which made him very nervous as he felt he had to protect and guard the whole family. This became overwhelming for him and he was returned to SGSR.
We took him in and it was over a week before he got comfortable and settled in to his new environment. Once he did, we started working in his basics, reinforcing what he already knew and teaching him that he didn’t need to feel like he was in charge. Realizing this, he started to become a more calm, confident dog. Training plus lots of frisbee play to release his energy has been very helpful for him.
We are very happy to announce that Vader has found his forever home and is living his best life now.
This sweetheart is Charlotte. She is an owner surrender taken in by Southeast German Shepherd Rescue and brought to us to work on her social skills. Charlotte is 15 months old and has lots of energy that had not been channeled into appropriate behavior, which caused her to have fearful reactions to both humans and dogs. Like so many dogs we see, she had not been exposed to effective leadership and had little regard for doing what was asked of her.
We have been working on her basic commands and starting to build confidence in different surroundings. She is very smart and a quick learner which has made her training go quickly. She has made great strides in her confidence levels and her interactions with people. She walks well on leash and has shown real progress with her fear-based reactions.
She will be with us for a while as the COVID19 epidemic keeps us at home, so we will be working on controlling her high-level energy and impulses. We are making great progress and hope to have her ready for adoption as soon as things get back normal.
We are very happy to report that Charlotte has found a wonderful new home and has been officially adopted!!! Have a great life sweet girl!!!!!
Sam is a special boy that we are very proud of. He came to us in January from Carolina Paws, one of the many pups they pull from area high kill shelters, so we really don’t know his story. However, he is a sweetheart and very lovable, but also had some unreliable behaviors that led to him coming to us for training.
Sam didn’t have any real training and definitely was his own boss, which led him to make some poor choices. He was a quick study and became very attached to us once he realized he wasn’t in charge anymore. His training went well and his choices became much better quickly. Sam spent just about two weeks with us learning to be a better follower and then went on to one of Carolina Paws wonderful volunteer fosters who was very interested in continuing his training. A couple of follow up sessions with Sam and his new foster he was well on the way to a better life.
And now we are very happy to announce that Sam has found his forever home with his foster! We are so happy for him!!!
Ricky
Meet Ricky. He is everything we love about Pit mixes. He is very energetic, loves people, other dogs and any adventure you want to take him on. For Ricky, it’s all about being with his people!
Ricky came to us to learn his manners when greeting people and walking on a leash. His basic training is now complete. He is rock solid with his recall, place, down, and heeling. He is still very excited to meet people, but has learned to control his enthusiasm, however his tail still goes a million miles an hour!
He would make a wonderful addition to any home and be a great companion. He loves to play with his squeaky balls and is great at playing fetch.
We are so happy to report that Ricky has found his forever home. Thank you Carolina Paws for letting us help find him a great new life!
Max
Max came to stay with us from Southeast German Shepherd Rescue who saved him from a very sad fate. He is a two year old GSD/Malinois mix. We worked on his greeting skills and his basic commands along with walking politely on a leash. He’s a wonderful, friendly guy with a love for chasing balls. Max would make a wonderful addition to an active family.

We are very happy to report that Max has found his forever home!!! Good luck, Max!
Laika
Laika was adopted through Southeast German Shepherd Rescue as a young puppy from an abandoned litter. Unfortunately, she was returned about a year later for behavioral and crate cleanliness issues. She was wild on a leash and didn’t pay any mind to humans, even though her owners had put her through a popular training program.
In a way, Laika, is responsible for the forming of Casey’s Legacy, Inc., as we recognized through working with her that a dog returned from adoption for being uncontrollable is much harder to place. We took her in and immediately started a structured life and basic training. Her reported kennel problems never materialized once she was on a water and food schedule, and her obedience came around quickly.
It was apparent that she needed consistent leadership and accountability. She soon thrived and was once again ready for adoption.
We are very happy to report that she found a great home with Ann and her family, and has moved on to a great life.
Thank you Laika for showing us the direction to take our passion!
Raven
Raven came to Casey’s Legacy, Inc. as a stray taken in by the Southeast German Shepherd Rescue. She was found wandering a neighborhood and held until we could pick her up. She was a gorgeous example of a German Shepherd. There was no idea of her past and no way to find an owner, or anyone looking for her. Sadly, that is the case of many dogs and it was suspected that she was dumped for behavioral or medical reasons.
We assessed Raven and found her to have no fear of or interest in humans. She didn’t interact with us and seemed not to care that we were with her at all. Her age was assumed to be approximately a year old. She appeared healthy, although after vetting, it was later determined that she was heartworm positive. It was also possible that she may have already had a litter.
Over the next few months she was spayed and underwent heartworm treatment. When possible, Raven started to receive basic training and conditioning. Typical of the breed, she was very smart and had an amazing ball drive. She was eager to work and quickly learned her basics, including being off leash.
She was well received at adoption events, had many inquiries, was very popular with kids and well behaved around other dogs.
It wasn’t until she met Sandy and Hienz, that she found the perfect forever home and now the pictures speak for themselves. She has a new brother as well, named Fritz, and has settled in to a great new life.
